Listed below are copies of the 1850 & 1860 U.S. Federal Census - Slave Schedules in Franklin County, Alabama.

Millie Guy's slave master, Dr. Joseph A. Guy moved his family and slaves from Raleigh, North Carolina to Tuscumbia, Alabama in 1825.

Dr. Joseph A. Guy's son Albert Guy is shown as the slave owner on the 1850 census and Dr. Guy is listed as the slave owner on the 1860 census.

Millie was 40 years old in the 1850 census and 50 years old in the 1860 census. Millie is listed in black bold print on both reports below:


Slaves were enumerated separately during the 1850 and 1860 censuses, though, unfortunately, most schedules do not provide personal names. In most cases, individuals were not named but were simply numbered and can be distinguished only by age, sex, and color; the names of owners are recorded. However, some enumerators listed the given names of slaves, particularly those over one hundred years of age. These names are generally found in the "name of slave owners" column. Other questions asked include whether a fugitive from the state (meaning if the slave had fled and not returned); number manumitted (or freed); whether deaf and dumb, blind, insane, or idiotic; and number of slave houses.

On May 24th 2007, four days after our reunion, Aunt Willie C. Guy-Hinton and myself, Darin (Pookie) Leake Sr. paid a visit to the Genealogical section of the Hernando, Ms. Library and discovered some new information on Millie Guy. It was discovered that :

1. Millie Guy was born in Raleigh, North Carolina around 1810. She was first owned by a Slave Master name Dr. Joseph Guy, born in 1769 of Irish extraction and his wife Esther Sharp-Guy.

2. Dr. Joseph Guy moved his family and his slaves from North Carolina to Tuscumbia County, Alabama in 1825. Millie Guy was around 15 years old at this time.

3. Tuscumbia County, Alabama is where Millie's two sons Baldy Guy (1841) and George Guy (1845) were born.

4. Millie Guy and her two sons were later owned by one of Dr. Joseph Guy's two sons, Albert Guy, born in 1802. His other son was named Curtis Haywood Guy, born in 1799.

5. It is not known at this time if Millie Guy's sons were fathered by another slave on the plantation or by one of her slave owners.
